Foreign Minister Ligi: Turkey is our important ally who we support on its way to the EU

Today, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jürgen Ligi met with the Foreign Minister of Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu who was visiting Estonia to discuss Estonia-Turkey relations, migration, security situation in Europe and also the situation in Syria and the question of Ukraine.

“Turkey is our important ally in NATO and Estonia supports Turkey on its way to the EU,” Foreign Minister Ligi reaffirmed at the meeting with his Turkish colleague. It was also pointed out during the meeting that Turkey was one of the first countries ready to police the Baltic air space when Estonia became a member of NATO. Foreign Minister Ligi expressed hope that the good relations between the two countries strengthen further and both foreign ministers also wished to develop economic cooperation.

Foreign Minister Ligi pointed out a wish to continue a dialogue with Turkey on different foreign policy questions and noted that Turkey is an irreplaceable partner in solving the migration crisis. According to Ligi, it is important for Estonia as the Chair of the Council of Europe, that strong cooperation between the organisation and Turkey continues after the attempted coup in Turkey. Minister Ligi emphasised how important it is to respect international and human rights agreements while solving the situation and to have fair and impartial trial.

Foreign Ministers signed an agreement between the Estonian and Turkish governments on the employment of the dependants of the staff of diplomatic representations and consular agencies. Such agreement gives the family members of the staff in both Estonian and Turkish diplomatic representations, consular agencies and permanent representations to international organisations a right to work in the host country.
