Foreign Minister Mikser: NATO’s role in ensuring security and prosperity is invaluable

Foreign Minister Sven Mikser was in Brussels today and discussed stability of the NATO neighbourhood, transatlantic cooperation and policy towards Russia with his NATO colleagues.

Alliance’s Foreign Ministers focused on NATO allied relations and cooperation between the US and Europe. “In recent years, NATO has considerably increased its deterrence and defence capability and its role in guaranteeing our security and prosperity is invaluable. Dangers from the south and the east have remained the same and it is important that European allies contribute enough to defence to ensure our collective security,” emphasised Mikser.

NATO Foreign Ministers together with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini and the Foreign Ministers of Finland and Sweden also discussed relations with Russia. “As long as Russia continues provocative and unpredictable behaviour and disturbs the security situation in Europe, there is no reason to change the current policy,” Mikser said. “Transatlantic cooperation and standing for our common values are a key to preserving stability, as increased allied presence and the presence of the US forces in the Baltic states illustrate,” emphasised Mikser.

Foreign Minister Mikser emphasised that Estonia supports strengthening NATO’s fight against terrorism and making it more visible. “NATO can achieve more in fight against terrorism through committed allies and their contribution. At the moment, Estonia contributes to US-led military operation Inherent Resolve against Daesh with a six-member training team and we are considering taking part in NATO training activities,” Mikser said. “We also see a need for stronger EU-NATO cooperation in fight against terrorism,” he added.

At the NATO-Ukraine Commission meeting, Foreign Ministers reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and acknowledged that Ukraine’s euroatlantic integration has a positive impact on the whole region.
