Mikser to EU High Representative Mogherini: Estonia ready for the Presidency


Foreign Minister Sven Mikser affirmed at today’s meeting with the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini that Estonia is ready for the Presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2017. The Foreign Minister and the High Representative also discussed the priorities of the Estonian presidency and other topical foreign policy issues.

“By now, the government has approved our programme. The main priorities of the Estonian presidency are security, development of the single and digital market, and the EU neighbourhood policy, including the Eastern Partnership,” the Foreign Minister confirmed. Mikser emphasised that Estonia would particularly like to see safe and inclusive Europe.

“Preparations for the Estonian Presidency of the EU Council have progressed well and are in final stages,” Mikser said. “We certainly must continue close cooperation and coordination with the European Commission and the European External Action Service during the presidency,” he emphasised. Mogherini confirmed readiness for close cooperation.

Other topics discussed included migration, Brexit and transatlantic cooperation. The Foreign Minister and the High Representative also discussed situation in the Eastern Partnership countries and Syria. 

The High Representative Federica Mogherini visits Estonia at the invitation of Foreign Minister Sven Mikser and the organisers of the Lennart Meri Conference.
