Foreign Minister Mikser thanks UK Foreign Secretary Johnson for contributing to regional security

Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser participated yesterday in the meeting of top diplomats from the Nordic countries and Baltic states (NB8) with UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson. The meeting focused on regional and global security, with transatlantic cooperation, the situation in the Middle East and Eastern Partnership also discussed.


Mikser thanked Johnson for the United Kingdom’s contribution to the NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP), which helps ensure the security of the Baltic region. “The UK’s role as the leader of the NATO eFP battle group has taken our security to a new level and significantly contributed to ensuring stability in the Baltic Sea region,” said Mikser.


Mikser emphasised that NATO must continue adapting and that transatlantic ties and the US military presence in the Baltic region, along with increasing defence spending, continue to be important. “Cooperation between the EU and NATO is more important than ever before,” said Mikser.


At the meeting, the foreign ministers also exchanged thoughts on developments in the UN Security Council, including on the topic of North Korea.


Mikser also acknowledged the UK’s commitment to EU Eastern Partnership, thanking Johnson for organising a high-level conference on reforms in Ukraine this past July.

The participants at the meeting of the foreign ministers from the Nordics, Baltics and the UK, at the invitation of UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, were: Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser, Finnish Foreign Minister Timo Soini, Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström, Icelandic Foreign Minister Gudlaugur Thór Thórdarson, Norwegian Foreign Minister Børge Brende, Danish Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs and Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Darius Skusevicius.
