Foreign Minister Mikser: coordinated cooperation must continue to support the Eastern Partnership countries

Today, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser met with the Foreign Minister of Lithuania, Linas Linkevičius, to discuss the Eastern Partnership, Estonia-Lithuania cooperation, the security situation and transatlantic relations.

“It is important to implement the decisions and promises made on the Eastern Partnership during the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU and we must also continue coordinated cooperation to support our partner countries,” Mikser said, and added that it is also important to focus on supporting the civil society of Eastern Partnership countries as the civil society is crucial to successful implementation of reforms.

“Estonia and Lithuania are great friends and allies that see economic, defence and security issues along the same lines. The focus of both countries is on regional energy and transport connections and establishing new connections to Europe which would enable us to ensure regional energy security,” Mikser added.

Both ministers emphasised the importance of transatlantic relations in ensuring the security of Baltic countries while discussing security and defence policy. The ministers also discussed preparations for the NATO Summit taking place next summer.

The meeting of foreign ministers also focused on economic and cultural cooperation between Estonia and Lithuania.

This evening, Foreign Minister Mikser takes part in a high-level conference Snow Meeting held in Trakai. Topical foreign and security policy issues and transatlantic cooperation will be discussed at the informal meeting. Mikser will take part in a discussion on the future of transatlantic relations.
