Estonia Hopes Egypt Has Peaceful Transition to International Consensus

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigning from the office of president has created opportunities for dialogue among all the political powers and the organisation of free elections in Egypt.

“President Mubarak resigning from office will help to restore national unity and create stability in Egypt. These opportunities must be utilised by all parties so that a peaceful dialogue could begin among all the political powers and the reforms that have been promised these past few weeks will be carried out,” he added.

Paet said that further developments in Egypt will have a significant impact on the North African and Middle Eastern region as a whole. “The most important thing is for future decisions to be made through negotiations, not in the streets, and for future developments not to include violence,” stated the Estonian foreign minister.

The change in the political situation has set the stage for a stabilisation of the situation in Egypt. Although the situation in Cairo and tourism areas is visibly calmer, the situation will remain unstable in the near future and travel to Egypt should still be avoided.
