Estonian Honorary Consulate in Kiel Re-Opened

On 13 April the Estonian Honorary Consulate in Kiel, the capital of the state of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany, was re-opened. Estonia’s new honorary consul in Kiel is IT entrepreneur Klaus-Hinrich Vater.

Ambassador Mart Laanemäe, speaking at the re-opening of the honorary consulate, thanked all the people of Schleswig-Holstein who continued developing the historically close contacts between Estonia and Schleswig-Holstein during the two-year period that the honorary consulate in Kiel was closed. Ambassador Laanemäe wished the new honorary consul luck in this important position.

Honorary Consul Klaus-Hinrich Vater said that as honorary consul, he would like to help develop economic ties between Estonia and Schleswig-Holstein, as well as improve bilateral co-operation in the social and cultural sectors.

In her welcoming speech, Minister of Schleswig-Holstein for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas Dr. Juliane Rumpf stated that the re-opening of the honorary consulate is an important step in intensifying partnership relations between Estonia and Schleswig-Holstein in various areas. The minister praised Estonia’s vigorous and determined activities and innovativeness in promoting information technology, developing the economy, and introducing the euro.

Other speakers at the opening of the honorary consulate were Maris Hellrand, who introduced Tallinn as an attractive European Capital of Culture 2011, and Ivar Tallo, who talked about Estonia as an e-state and Estonia’s successful development in the information technology sector.

Over 70 people from the business, cultural, and research circles as well as the consular corps of Schleswig-Holstein and the city of Kiel attended the opening of the honorary consulate.

The Kiel Boys’ Choir performed pieces by German and Estonian composers during the opening ceremony, including “Mu isamaa on minu arm”.

Estonia’s new honorary consul Klaus-Hinrich Vater was born in Kiel in 1965. After graduating from the University of Applied Sciences in Kiel as a licensed engineer in 1991, he began working in the information technology sector. In 1997 Klaus-Hinrich Vater established his own business called Vater Gruppe, which deals with IT solutions and services, and in a short amount of time became one of the leading IT specialists in Schleswig-Holstein. Today his company has 270 employees in Kiel, Hamburg, and Bremen. Klaus-Hinrich Vater has been the president of the Kiel Chamber of Commerce and Industry since 2009.

In addition to Kiel, Estonia also had honorary consulates in Germany in Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Ludwigsburg, and Munich.
