Estonia Does Not Recognise Elections Organised in South Ossetia

No. 365-E

Estonia does not recognise the elections that were organised on Georgia’s territory in South Ossetia on 13 November, which disregard Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and are not legitimate.

Estonia shares the position expressed in the statement made by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on 14 November, namely that the European Union respects Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and does not recognise the legal and constitutional framework within which these elections took place.

In order to ensure security and stability in the region it is essential for the Geneva talks and the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia to continue.
