Foreign Minister Urmas Paet Opened Estonian Consulate General in Sydney

No. 374-E

Today Foreign Minister Urmas Paet opened the Estonian Consulate General in Sydney, which is Estonia’s first diplomatic representation in Australia.

At the opening of the consulate general, Foreign Minister Paet said that the Foreign Ministry decided to open a representation in Australia because more and more Estonian citizens there are in need of consular services and Estonia’s relations with Australia have continued to become closer.

“There are about 10 000 Estonian citizens living in Australia on a temporary or permanent basis, and they need to renew their ID documents or they require some other consular support,” he added.
Relations with Australia have also developed. “Estonia shares the same values as Australia, and co-operating with countries that live by the same values as us is increasingly important,” he added.
The Estonian consul general in Australia is Triinu Rajasalu. More information can be found on the webpage:

Tomorrow, 22 November, Foreign Minister Paet will meet in Canberra with his colleague, Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, and President of the Senate Senator John Hogg. He will also participate in a session of the House of Representatives. In addition, Paet will participate in a roundtable being held by the Australian National University’s Centre for European Studies.
