Foreign Minister Paet Confirmed That Estonia Supports UNICEF in Helping Children in Crisis Areas

21.05.2012

No. 139–E

At his meeting in New York with Executive Director of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Anthony Lake, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that Estonia supports UNICEF’s activities to improve the situation of children living in countries plagued by conflict.

Paet stated that UNICEF fills a vital and unique role in protecting and aiding children who are suffering due to conflicts or natural disasters. “Estonia has supported UNICEF for 13 years and will continue to do so. Estonia is also prepared to offer UNICEF some e-solutions that would make the organisation’s work even more effective,” he added.

This year Estonia has contributed to activities helping children in Yemen, the Central African Republic, and Chad. At the meeting with Lake, Paet said that Estonia would also support UNICEF’s work to make life better for the children of South Sudan.

Lake thanked Estonia for its good co-operation and for filling the role of vice president of the UNICEF executive board.
