Foreign Minister Urmas Paet Met With Honorary Consuls Representing Estonia in North America

At his meeting in New York with the honorary consuls that represent Estonia in North America, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that thanks to the honorary consuls Estonian citizens in the United States, Canada and Mexico have easier access to consular aid and consular services. “You also provide a great deal of help in promoting the political, economic, cultural, educational, and other sectors,” Paet noted. “We are pleased with our constantly growing network of honorary consuls,” he added. The last honorary consulate that was opened in the United States is located in New Orleans.

The foreign minister also talked to the honorary consuls about the latest developments in Estonia and Estonian foreign policy.

Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Economic and Development Affairs Väino Reinart introduced plans and trends regarding Estonia’s business and cultural diplomacy to the honorary consuls. Director general of the Foreign Ministry consular department Rasmus Lumi spoke about consular work via teleconferencing.

The honorary consuls talked about their experiences thus far as honorary consuls and discussed how to better introduce Estonian culture, products and services in North America.

Estonia has honorary consuls in the United States in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Atlanta, Charleston, Portsmouth, Seattle, Lincoln, New Orleans and Houston. In Canada there are honorary consuls in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, Halifax and Quebec. Estonia also has an honorary consul in Mexico.
