Estonian-Born Cleanup Campaign “Let’s Do It!” to Take Place in Rio de Janeiro

19.06.2012

Nr 177–E

Today, 19 June, a cleanup action born from the Estonian civic initiative “Let’s Do It!” will take place in Rio de Janeiro as part of the UN Conference for Sustainable Development Rio+20. The purpose of the event is to introduce the world cleanup campaign “Let’s Do It World Cleanup 2012” to the delegations attending the Rio+20 conference.

The cleanup event will take place at Garota de Ipanema Park in Rio de Janeiro, and in addition to cleaning up the land there will also be divers cleaning up the ocean floor.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, who will also take part in the cleanup event, said that the “Let’s Do It!” cleanup campaign is a good example of how the civic initiative that got its start in Estonia in 2008 has gone global. “This year there are almost 100 countries participating in the ‘Let’s Do It World Cleanup 2012’ campaign,” he stated. “All of us want this kind of sustainable development. If each of us does a little bit, we can achieve a lot,” he added.

Also participating in the event will be Estonian Honorary Consul in Rio de Janeiro Oskar Metsavaht and one of the founders of the world cleanup campaign, Rainer Nõlvak.
