Estonian Ambassador to Turkey Presents Credentials

On Monday, 8 October, Estonian Ambassador to Turkey Miko Haljas presented his credentials to Turkish President Abdullah Gül.

In the discussion that followed the presentation of credentials, President Abdullah Gül and Ambassador Miko Haljas emphasised the extremely good relations between Estonia and Turkey and discussed opportunities to further intensify their connections. President Gül thanked Estonia for its support in integrating Turkey with the European Union and in the visa facilitation process. Ambassador Haljas confirmed Estonia’s ongoing support and emphasised that as long as the instability in the Middle East continues and Europe is facing economic challenges, relations with Turkey are more important to Estonia and the European Union than ever before.

President Abdullah Gül and Ambassador Miko Haljas exchanged thoughts on the situation in Syria and events on the border between Turkey and Syria. Ambassador Haljas passed along condolences from the Estonian president and Estonian government over the incident in Akcakale that claimed the lives of five victims. Haljas confirmed that Estonian fully condemns Syria’s actions and appreciates the restraint Turkey has demonstrated in responding to the border incidents that began on 20 September. President Gül and Ambassador Haljas emphasised the responsibility of the international community and first and foremost the UN Security Council in resolving the Syrian crisis. 

On Tuesday, 9 October Ambassador Haljas placed a wreath on the Ataturk memorial.

Miko Haljas was born on 20 January 1967 in Tallinn. He graduated from Tallinn University of Technology in 1994 and from the Estonian School of Diplomacy in 1995. Miko Haljas has worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1995. He has also taken courses at the Clingendael Institute for International Relations in The Hague and at the NATO Defence College in Rome. Miko Haljas has worked for the Foreign Ministry since 1995.  He worked in the Estonian Embassy in Helsinki from 1999-2000 and in Washington from 2000-2002. From 2006 to 2010 Haljas was the ambassador to Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia, residing in Budapest. Prior to assuming his current position Miko Haljas was the director general of the Foreign Ministry’s department for international organisations and security policy.
