New Estonian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Presents Credentials

Today, 29 November, Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to the Republic of Azerbaijan Miko Haljas presented his credentials to President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

In the discussion that followed the presentation of credentials, President Aliyev spoke with Ambassador Haljas about the further development of relations between the countries. “Estonia is interested in developing economic relations with Azerbaijan. We hope to find new opportunities for economic co-operation through the work of the intergovernmental economic council,” said Haljas.

According to Ambassador Haljas, President Aliyev said at the meeting that relations between Estonia and Azerbaijan are good and have become significantly closer during recent years. The president also emphasised the need to develop, in addition to political relations, more active economic relations as well, for example in the information technology sector.

Ideas were also exchanged regarding the development of educational co-operation. Ambassador Haljas said that Estonian universities are interested in co-operating with Azerbaijan.

Haljas also confirmed Estonia’s support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and expressed hope that the parties can reach a resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh issue within the framework of the Minsk Process, based on the Madrid principles.

At the meeting they also discussed Azerbaijan’s co-operation with the European Union, including energy security matters. Also discussed was Azerbaijan’s international role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Ambassador Miko Haljas was born on 20 January 1967 in Tallinn. He graduated from Tallinn University of Technology in 1994 and from the Estonian School of Diplomacy in 1995. He has also studied at the Clingendael Institute for International Relations in The Hague and at the NATO Defence College in Rome. Miko Haljas has worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1995. Miko Haljas has worked for the Foreign Ministry since 1995.  He worked in the Estonian Embassy in Helsinki from 1999-2000 and in Washington from 2000-2002. From 2006 to 2010 Haljas was the ambassador to Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia, residing in Budapest. Prior to assuming his current position Miko Haljas was the director general of the Foreign Ministry’s department for international organisations and security policy. Miko Haljas is also Estonia’s ambassador to Turkey.
