During his meeting in Batum with Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili and Parliament Speaker David Usupashvili, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet confirmed that Estonia supports Georgia in its relations with NATO and the European Union through both practical and political co-operation. “It is essential for Georgia to continue with the reform process,” Paet stated.

According to Foreign Minister Paet, Estonia would like for the European Union Eastern Partnership summit taking place at the end of the year in Vilnius to produce concrete results regarding Georgia. “We support the initialling of an association agreement including a deep and comprehensive free trade agreement between the European Union and Georgia and moving forward with the visa waiver action plan,” he added.

Paet confirmed that Georgia continues to be one of Estonia’s priority partners for development co-operation.

Foreign Minister Paet stated that there is much room for development in Estonia and Georgia’s bilateral economic relations. “We hope to soon conclude an agreement for the protection of investments with Georgia, which would help to make entrepreneurs feel more secure,” said Foreign Minister Paet. Prime Minister Ivanishvili gave an overview of recent developments in Georgia’s economy.

During the meeting, Paet discussed domestic political developments in Georgia and matters related to the upcoming presidential elections with both Ivanishvili and Usupashvili. “In order for the elections to be successful and society to be unified, it is essential that all political powers behave responsibly,” said Foreign Minister Paet. He also added that Estonia plans to send observers to Georgia to monitor the elections.

Paet and Usupashvili expressed satisfaction over the close co-operation between the Estonian and Georgian parliaments.
