Estonia's first ambassador to Tunisia handed over his credentials


On March 21, Estonian Ambassador to Tunisia Sven Jürgenson handed over his credentials to President Moncef Marzouki. Following the ceremony, Estonian ambassador Sven Jürgenson and president Marzouki discussed Estonian-Tunisian relations, the economic development of both countries and the global situation. During the meeting, they also discussed sharing Estonia's e-government’s experiences with Tunisia, as well as opportunities for strengthening contacts between nations.

“The relations between our nations are good and there are a number of areas of cooperation,” Ambassador Sven Jürgenson said. “In addition to economic relations, we should further develop the already existing cooperation between our two countries in the field of e-governance,” he added.

At a meeting with Tunisian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Faycal Gouia, prior to the Ambassador’s handing over his credentials,  the topic of conversation was also the development of bilateral relations. Questions surrounding visa freedom were also addressed. “In the tourism sphere, a key step forward would be visa exemptions for individual travellers from Estonia, in addition to those visiting Tunisia with tourist groups,” Ambassador Jürgenson said.

Diplomatic relations between Estonia and Tunisia were established on June 29, 1992. Sven Jürgenson who resides in Paris, is the first accredited Estonian ambassador to Tunisia. The Estonian Honorary Consul in Tunis since 2008 has been Jelil Bouraoui.

Ambassador Sven Jürgenson was born in Tartu in 1962. He graduated from the information processing department of Tallinn Polytechnic Institute. He started doing diplomatic work in 1991, when he went to work for the Estonian Embassy in Helsinki. From 1993 to 1995, Sven Jürgenson worked at the Estonian Embassy in Vienna. From 1995 to 1996, he was the director of the Foreign Ministry’s division for international organisations and security and the deputy director of the political department. From 1996 to 1998, Sven Jürgenson was the director general of the political department, while also serving as the Estonian ambassador to Turkey residing in Tallinn. From 1998 to 2000, he was the Estonian ambassador to the UN, and from 2000 to 2003 Jürgenson served as the ambassador to the United States. From 2003 to 2006, Sven Jürgenson was the Foreign Ministry undersecretary for political affairs and from 2006 to 2010 worked in the Chancellery of the President as the foreign policy advisor. Since 2010 Sven Jürgenson is the Estonian Ambassador to France and since 2011, the Ambassador of Monaco.

The ambassador speaks English, German, French, Finnish and Russian.
