Foreign Minister Kaljurand is visiting Turkey as Chairman of the Council of Europe

Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand as Chairman of the Council of Europe and its 47 member states is on a visit in Ankara today and tomorrow, 24-25 August.

Kaljurand will be meeting with the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Speaker of the Turkish Parliament İsmail Kahraman, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ and representatives of the opposition parties.

The meeting will focus on the situation in Turkey after the attempted coup of 15 July. Members of the Council of Europe have condemned the attempted coup and expressed solidarity with the Turkish people and democratically elected constitutional institutions. As a Chairman of the Council of Europe the main focus of the meeting is on human rights, democracy and defending the rule of law.

In addition Foreign Minister will discuss Estonia’s bilateral relations with Turkey, Turkey’s relations with the EU, regional security and other important foreign policy questions.

Estonia is the Chairman of the Council of Europe from 18 May until 22 November.
