Mikser: main task of Estonia during Presidency of the EU Council to maintain EU unity and decisiveness

Today, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser met with the Foreign Minister of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs in Tallinn to discuss bilateral relations, regional cooperation and the questions of transport, energy and security.

The foreign ministers reaffirmed friendly and allied relations between Estonia and Latvia in the fields of economy, defence, culture and in the international organisations. “Given the recent developments on international stage we see the need to use regional formats even more, for example the Nordic-Baltic Cooperation NB8,” Mikser emphasised. “Together we are more visible and our positions have more resonance,” he added.

Talking about the Estonian Presidency of the EU Council, the Foreign Minister noted that Estonia’s main task is to maintain the unity and decisiveness of the EU. “Holding the Presidency of the EU Council is not an easy task. It is good to know that we can count on the help and support of Latvia if needed,” Mikser said.

Talking about Rail Baltic, the foreign ministers emphasised that the countries agree on the project’s regional meaning and necessity.
