Estonian Ensemble Vox Clamantis Has United States Debut Today

The Gregorian chant ensemble Vox Clamantis is performing today, 16 December, in Manhattan Community Church in New York. They will be giving two concerts in the USA to celebrate Arvo Pärt’s important birthday this year.

They group will be performing works by Arvo Pärt as well as Gregorian chants and early polyphony. The performance is entitled “Da Pacem Domine” and was created in honour of Arvo Pärt’s 75th birthday. The concert has also been performed in Estonia this year.

The vocal ensemble is directed by artistic director and conductor Jaan-Eik Tulve. The performers in the US concerts will be Eve Kopli, Mikk Üleoja, Mikk Dede, Sakarias Jaan Leppik, Markus Järvi, Aare Külama, Riivo Kallasmaa, and Anna Datyna. On Sunday, 19 December, the ensemble will perform at the Silver Spring Calvary Lutheran Church in Maryland.

The Vox Clamantis concerts were made possible by the support of the Estonian Embassy in Washington and Consulate General in New York, the Estonian Ministry of Culture, the Washington Estonian Society, the Estonian American National Council, and Finnair Estonia.

The repertoire of Vox Clamantis primarily comprises Gregorian chant and early polyphony. The group has also sought out new ways to express their traditional performance style. New works have been written especially for Vox Clamantis by many Estonian composers, such as Arvo Pärt, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Helena Tulve, Toivo Tulve, and Tõnis Kaumna.
