Foreign Minister Urmas Paet: opening of a head consulate in Sydney strengthens relations with Australia

No. 287-E

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said at today’s meeting in Tallinn with Australia’s Special Envoy Russell Trood that the depth of Estonian-Australian relations is shown by the Estonian head consulate that opened in Sydney. “The head consulate that was launched in Sydney is necessary to Estonia in its relations with Australia as well as for the large community of Estonians in Australia,“ said Paet. “Besides the more than 9,000 Estonians living in Australia, Estonians in the old country have embraced Australia in significant numbers as a travel destination outside Europe,“ he added.

Paet said the close cooperation between NATO and the European Union and Australia was very important. “In today’s world, it is extremely important that countries that share the same values work closely together and thus development of relations with Australia plays a significant role,”

Foreign Minister Paet also noted the successful cooperation in international organizations. “Estonia and Australia enjoy close cooperation in the UN,” said Paet. “Last year, the goal of both countries was to carry out reform of the UN development aid system and to create a UN agency to oversee gender equality, which thanks to the joint efforts proved successful.”
