Foreign Minister Paet Discussed Israel-Palestine Situation with Israeli Foreign Minister Lieberman

26.09.2011

No. 309-E

At his meeting in New York yesterday with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Estonia feels it is important to restore direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine that would lead to a two-state solution and reduce tension in the region. “This is especially important right now, when the continuation of the crisis could affect the developments of the entire Arab Spring,” he noted.

Paet confirmed that Estonia does not support one-sided steps that are not conducive to finding a solution. “Such moves create high expectations and evoke strong emotions, and when the expectations are not rapidly met the result is more disappointment, as well as a weakening of the stability of the region and the postponement of Israel-Palestine negotiations even further into the future,” Paet said at the meeting.

During the meeting, Israeli Foreign Minister Lieberman expressed his disappointment over Palestine undertaking one-sided steps. He added that this approach does not help the Middle East peace process and confirmed that Israel is prepared to continue with negotiations.

Foreign Ministers Paet and Lieberman also discussed bilateral relations during their meeting. “It is important to intensify trade relations and continue with political consultations,” noted the Estonian foreign minister.

Foreign Minister Paet also met with representatives of the American Jewish Committee in New York. At the meeting, Paet said that the Estonian Jewish community plays an important role in Estonia’s economic and cultural life. During his meeting with representatives of the American Jewish Committee, Paet also discussed the situations in the Middle East and Northern Africa as well as in Belarus.

While in New York, Paet also met with the foreign ministers of European Union and NATO member states as well as his colleagues from Jordan, Indonesia and Gambia.
