21.10.2011

No. 339-E

At his meeting in Tallinn today with Finnish Parliament Speaker Eero Heinaluoma, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet emphasised that co-operation between Estonia and Finland and within the Baltic Sea region in general has helped to make the region one of the most dynamic in the European Union. “Estonia and Finland contribute to the development of the Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region and the digital market. We also both feel that it is important for the EU internal market as a whole to function better than it has previously,” he stated. The foreign minister added that it is also important to speed up Baltic Sea region co-operation in the cyber security sector.

Paet and Heinaluoma also discussed European Union issues and agreed that the European Union should continue to support and help those nations that value democracy and have set the goal of becoming more tightly integrated with the EU.

Other topics addressed at the meeting were the importance of Estonia-Finland defence and security co-operation and the experience of working together in the European Union Nordic Battle Group.
