Foreign Minister Urmas Paet Met With President of the European Court of Justice

01.06.2012

No. 154-E

At his meeting in Tallinn today with President of the European Court of Justice Vassilios Skouris, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet discussed matters related to the reform of the European Court of Justice.

Foreign Minister Paet stated that it is important that the European Court settle cases quickly and effectively, which is why the work of the court must be reformed. “The efficient functioning of the court is in the interest of all European Union citizens. First and foremost it is essential that cases that affect Europe’s economy or entrepreneurs are resolved quickly,” said Paet.

According to the president of the European Court, the EU member states are currently formulating their positions regarding the reform of the European Court of Justice. One example of a change that would make the work of the court more productive is increasing the number of judges.

The foreign minister said that Estonia supports making the processing of court cases more modern and efficient by adopting the electronic environment of the European Court called e-Curia. “The use of e-solutions would help for case documents to move more swiftly between the court and the litigants,” said Paet.

President of the European Court of Justice Vassilios Skouris is in Estonia for the 25th Congress of the International Federation for European Law (FIDE), which is being attended by over 500 of Europe’s top lawyers and legal experts.
