Estonia Opened Honorary Consulate in Liverpool

On Monday, 26 November, Foreign Ministry Secretary General Alar Streimann opened Estonia’s new honorary consulate in Liverpool in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Estonia’s new honorary consul is Kai Hughes. The opening of the honorary consulate was also attended by Estonian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Aino Lepik von Wirén and Mayor of Liverpool Sharon Sullivan.

At the opening of the honorary consulate, Secretary General Alar Streimann spoke about the historical ties between Estonia and the United Kingdom and the invaluable role the British fleet played in the Estonian War of Independence in 1918. “Today we can talk about the wonderful bilateral relations between Estonia and the United Kingdom as well as different opportunities to share our experiences, for example in the realm of e-governance,” said Secretary General Streimann. The secretary general recognised the role and work of honorary consuls in developing bilateral relations. Kai Hughes said that as an honorary consul, he would like to do his part to intensify economic relations as well as educational and cultural relations between the United Kingdom and Estonia.

On Monday, 26 November Foreign Ministry Secretary General Alar Streimann met in London with Permanent Undersecretary of the UK Foreign Office Simon Fraser. The two discussed matters related to the organisation of work in the foreign ministries, as well as European Union matters and co-operation in Afghanistan.

The consular region of Estonian Honorary Consul Kai Hughes are the counties of Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire and Merseyside, as well as the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester and the Isle of Man.

Honorary Consul Kai Hughes was born in 1960 in Fareham, Hampshire. On leaving school, Hughes was educated at Britannia Royal Naval College and also has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Liverpool and a MBA from Manchester Metropolitan University.  He has served as an Officer in the Royal Navy and worked as the University Secretary or Director of Legal Services at various British universities. In 2008 Hughes became the Chief Executive Office of the International Cotton Association Limited (ICA) and the Managing Director of ICA Bremen, the ICA’s international quality testing and research centre in Bremen. Hughes is also active on the Alumni Board at the University of Liverpool.
