Estonia Supports Study Opportunities for Young Belarusians

28.01.2013

No 22-E

The Foreign Ministry is supporting the European Humanitarian University of Belarus in Vilnius in order to help expand study opportunities for young Belarusians and develop the civil society of Belarus.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that the European Humanitarian University of Belarus is a place where Belarusian students that have difficulties acquiring higher education in their homeland due to their views can study. “We want for Belarusian youths to be guaranteed an opportunity to live and study in an open society,” Paet emphasised. “Only carefully considered, focused, and continuous support will allow the civil society of Belarus to develop, and experiences in an open society will also help with this process,” he added.

The Belarusian European Humanitarian University functions in Vilnius after the school was closed by Belarusian authorities in Minsk in 2004. Prior to that, the school operated in Minsk with international financial support since 1992. The European Humanitarian University of Belarus has bachelor, master and doctorate programmes. Within the nine departments of the university one can study philosophy, theology, political science, psychology, international law, international economics, economics, art history, international cultural tourism, or information technology.

The Foreign Ministry is supporting study opportunities for young Belarusians with 12 780 euros donated through the European Humanities Trust Fund, which was created in 2007 to financially support the university. The fund is overseen by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
