Estonian and Icelandic Foreign Ministers Call on North Korea to End Threats

Nr 122-E

At their meeting in Reykjavik today, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet and Icelandic Foreign Minister Össur Skarphéðinsson discussed developments on the Korean peninsula, relations between Estonia and Iceland, and Iceland’s accession to the European Union.

The foreign ministers emphasised that the North Korean regime must without hesitation put an end to its provocative behaviour and threats. “We call on North Korea to refrain from taking steps that could have far-reaching consequences,” said Foreign Minister Urmas Paet.

Foreign Minister Paet stated that North Korea’s threatening rhetoric and provocative actions are intensifying tensions in the region. “The increasingly strained situation has created a chance that the smallest incident could set off a real conflict,” said Paet.

When talking about European Union enlargement, Foreign Minister Paet confirmed that Estonia would like for the EU to expand in Northern Europe. “Iceland’s preparation and dedication sets a good example for other EU candidate countries. Iceland’s EU membership would surely benefit both sides,” Paet added.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Estonia’s ties with Iceland are strong. “The fact that the Icelandic embassy will be located within the Estonian embassy in Beijing is a good example of the close co-operation between our countries,” Paet added.

Paet and Skarphéðinsson said that Estonia and Iceland are both interested in intensifying consular co-operation. “We would like to organise consular consultations to discuss in more detail opportunities for co-operation regarding, for example, visa representation and facilitating document exchange,” said Paet. “We would also like to conclude an agreement with Iceland to reciprocally recognise public documents without an apostille, which would make it much easier for people in Estonia and Iceland to manage their affairs,” he added.

Estonia and Iceland are also interested in promoting economic co-operation and making contacts between companies more active.
