Estonian Ambassador to Malaysia Presents Credentials

On Tuesday, 2 July Estonian Ambassador to Malaysia Andres Unga presented his credentials to King Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah. The Estonia ambassador resides in Tallinn.

In the discussion that followed the credential-presenting ceremony, Ambassador Andres Unga and King of Malaysia Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah discussed bilateral relations and opportunities to develop them. “There is a lot of untapped potential in Estonia and Malaysia’s bilateral relations in the areas of economics, educational co-operation, and tourism,” Ambassador Unga noted. The king of Malaysia expressed his satisfaction that Estonia has decided to accredit an ambassador in Malaysia. During their meeting Ambassador Unga also passed along greetings from President Toomas Hendrik Ilves.

The king of Malaysia also expressed interest in Estonia’s e-elections and IT-related developments in general. “We feel that the IT sector holds good potential for co-operation between Estonia and Malaysia,” Ambassador Unga noted while giving the king an overview of Estonia’s e-services.

They also discussed the recent history of both countries and recent developments in the region.

Andres Unga was born in 1966 in Viljandi. After graduating from university, Unga went to work in the protocol department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and stayed in that department until 1996 as a deputy director, director and then director general. From 1996 to 2000, Unga was the ambassador to Sweden, and after that he worked as the director general of the Ministry’s human resources department. From 2003-2007 Andres Unga was the ambassador to Greece. From 2004-2007 he was the non-residing Estonian ambassador to Cyprus and from 2003-2008 he was the non-residing ambassador to Armenia. Unga was the ambassador to China from 2007-2012. From 2008-2012 he was also the non-residing ambassador to Vietnam and from 2010-2012 the non-residing ambassador to South Korea.

As of 2009 Ambassador Unga has been the non-residing ambassador to Thailand. Since the beginning of this year he is also the ambassador to Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore.

Ambassador Andres Unga is married and has two children. Unga speaks English, Russian and Swedish.
