The New Ambassador to Poland Presents His Credentials

On Thursday,September 5, the new Ambassador of Estonia to Poland Eerik Marmei presented his credentials to President Bronisław Komorowski in Warsaw.

In the conversation that followed the ceremony of presenting credentials, Ambassador Marmei and President Komorowski spoke about relations between the two countries, cooperation in NATO and the EU, and cyber security cooperation.

Ambassador Marmei thanked Poland for actively participating in the Baltic air policing mission, strengthening collective defence in the region, and intensifying bilateral defence cooperation. “Poland is a strategically important, responsible, and trustworthy ally and it shares our perspectives in NATO, the European Union, and developing regional cooperation,” stressed the ambassador.

President Komorowski pointed out the deep and close ties between the two countries in a variety of fields and stressed the need for even closer cooperation in bringing Ukraine and other Eastern Partnership countries into strategic cooperation with the EU. In the conversation, the opportunities for further cooperation between Baltic Sea countries, the Nordic and Baltic states, as well as the group of four Visegrad countries – Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary – were also discussed, and the need to strongly develop both the Rail Baltic and joint energy projects was stressed as well.

At the meeting, President Komorowski highly valued Estonian activity in the field of cyber security and considered it necessary to deal with the topic more effectively. Also, Ambassador Marmei conveyed regards of President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and the Estonian government to the Polish head of state.

Eerik Marmei was born on May 6, 1970 in Tartu. In 1988, he graduated from Miina Härma High School, in 1993 from the philosophy department of Tartu University with a specialization in history, and in 1996 he obtained a master’s degree in international relations from Notre Dame University in the United States.

Eerik Marmei has been working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1993. He has worked in the political department of the ministry as the desk officer for USA, as the director of the bureau for international organizations and security, and in the Estonian delegation to NATO in the years 1998-2000. From 2000-2003, he worked in the Embassy of Estonia in Washington and from 2005-2008 in the Embassy of Estonia in London. In 2008-2010 Marmei was the head of NATO and EU department of the Ministry of Defence and since 2010 has been the director of security policy and arms control division in political department of the foreign ministry.
