NATO Foreign Ministers Condemned Use of Excessive Force Against Protestors in Ukraine


Last night, the foreign ministers of NATO member states made a joint statement that condemned the use of excessive force against protestors in Ukraine: “We call on all parties to refrain from provocations and violence.”

According to Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, the Ukrainian authorities must respect its citizens’ freedoms of expression and association. “It is necessary to have dialogue between the government and the opposition in order to make choices about Ukraine’s future,” stated Paet.

The NATO foreign ministers’ statement confirms that Ukraine is an important partner for the alliance and Ukraine’s contribution to ensuring international security is highly valued. “Our partnership will continue on the basis of the values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. NATO remains committed to supporting the reform process in Ukraine.”
