Kaljurand: the ruling regarding Crimean Tatars is a serious violation of human rights

27.04.2016

Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand expressed concern about the situation of the Crimean Tatars.

“I consider the so-called Supreme Court of Crimea's decision yesterday to declare the governing body of the Crimean Tatar community, the Mejlis, an extremist organization, and to ban its activity, a serious violation of human rights by Russia,” Kaljurand said.

Kaljurand stressed that she is deeply concerned about the vulnerable situation of the Crimean Tatars following the illegal annexation of Crimea. “We, together with the international community, call on Russia to respect the rights of indigenous peoples and to fulfil the commitments it has made in protecting human rights,” – the Foreign Minister stated.
