Estonian Ambassador to Bulgaria Presents Credentials

No. 338-E

On Thursday, 20 October, Estonian Ambassador to Bulgaria Toomas Kukk presented his credentials to Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov.

In the conversation that followed the presentation of credentials, Ambassador Toomas Kukk and President Georgi Parvanov discussed the good relations between the countries and opportunities to develop them further. President Parvanov expressed hope that Estonia and Bulgaria’s economic relations would intensify and that Estonian investments in Bulgaria would increase. Both sides acknowledged that there is considerable potential for future IT-related co-operation between the countries. While talking about European Union topics, Ambassador Kukk confirmed to President Parvanov that Estonia supports Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area and expressed hope that a solution to this issue that is satisfactory to all EU member states would be found very soon.

Relations between Estonia and Bulgaria got their start in 1921, when Bulgaria recognised Estonia. Bulgaria recognised Estonia once more on 26 August 1991 and diplomatic relations were re-established on 10 September 1991. The Estonian Embassy in Bulgaria was opened in 2006.

Ambassador Toomas Kukk was born on 10 August 1971 in Tapa. He completed Tapa Upper Secondary School and graduated from the Tallinn University of Technology with a degree in automation. Toomas Kukk completed the Estonian School of Diplomacy in 1995 and began working for the Foreign Ministry that same year. Toomas Kukk has worked in various positions in the Foreign Ministry, as well as at the Estonian Embassy in Poland and the Estonian Representation to NATO. Before being named the ambassador to Bulgaria, Toomas Kukk worked as an external affairs counsellor for Prime Minister Andrus Ansip.
