Foreign Minister Urmas Paet Met With Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill

Today in Tallinn Foreign Minister Urmas Paet spoke with Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill about Estonia-Russia relations and the development of the Orthodox Church.

Foreign Minister Paet stated that there are many positive aspects of Estonia and Russia’s relations. “From year to year, communication among people has intensified. For example, last year the number of Russian tourists visiting Estonia grew by 31 percent,” said Paet. The foreign minister added that economic relations between the countries has intensified as well. Russia ranks as Estonia’s third trade and export partner and fifth among destinations for Estonia’s direct investments. “Communication has also picked up between Estonia and Russia’s customs boards,  audit offices, legal institutions, and on the level of municipal governments. It is also essential that the leaders of the countries converse regularly. The visit of Patriarch Kirill to Estonia sets a good example,” he noted.

Patriarch Kirill considers the positive development of Estonia-Russia relations to be extremely important.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Paet brought up the topic of cultural co-operation between the countries. “Exchanges related to religious and Orthodox culture also play a role in this,” he said.

At the meeting, the foreign minister also recognised Metropolitan Cornelius’s activities in leading the Estonian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate. Paet also expressed his satisfaction over the fact that in the fall the Estonian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate will open an Estonian-language school in Nõmme.
