Estonian Ambassador to Canada Presents Credentials

On Tuesday, 27 August, the Estonian Ambassador to Canada, Gita Kalmet, presented her credentials to Canada’s Governor General David Johnston in Ottawa. Kalmet is the first Estonian Ambassador to Canada to reside in Ottawa.

In the conversation that followed the ceremony of presenting credentials, Governor General David Johnston and Ambassador Gita Kalmet spoke about the state visit of President Toomas Hendrik Ilves to Canada in May. Ambassador Kalmet conveyed President Ilves’ appreciation to the governor general for the state visit and repeated the invitation to visit Estonia.

The governor general approvingly noted the role of the Estonian community in Canada in improving mutual understanding and expressed contentment that Estonia has raised the level of diplomatic representation in Canada by accrediting an Ambassador to Ottawa.

During the exchange of thoughts regarding development of bilateral relations, topics discussed included the possibility of Canadian participation in the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn, IT-related pilot projects, and strengthening bilateral relations, for which an excellent opportunity is provided by the youth exchange agreement between Estonia and Canada.

Recognising the value of potential Estonia-Canada cooperation in the fields of culture and education, Johnston noted that he, as a former president of the University of Waterloo, was particularly pleased that cooperation between Tallinn Technical University and University of Waterloo was launched during the course of the visit.

Gita Kalmet was born in Tallinn in 1959. In 1984 she graduated from the Tallinn National Conservatory, and she has also studied at Estonian School of Diplomacy and University of Oxford. Kalmet has served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1993. In the years 1999-2002 she worked at the Embassy of Estonia in Paris. Subsequently she worked at the European Union department as Director of the Office of General Affairs and after 2006 served as the Ambassador to Holland. From fall 2011 she worked as Director General of the Public Diplomacy Department.
